Functional Movement Screening is an effective method of observing movement imbalances within a player. Functional movements are movements that are commonly used in physical activity and sport.
Screening compromises of seven tasks that require a balance of mobility and strength. The tests place the individual in positions where weakness and muscle imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and stability are not utilised. The physiotherapist observes a players movement pattern. This in turn indicates imbalances in terms of muscle tightness and weakness. Once compensations have been identified, pre-habilitation / corrective exercise programmes can be prescribed to address individual muscle imbalances, asymmetries and movement dysfunctions.
